Non-Allergic Rhinitis

What Is Non-Allergic Rhinitis?

Non-Allergic Rhinitis is an inflammation of the nasal passages.  It acts like an allergy, but is diagnosed after allergies have been ruled out.  It is annoying, but has no serious complications.  Basically, your nose is overly sensitive to irritants in the environment.  It occurs in children as well as adults, and can become a problem for the first time at any age.

What Are The Symptoms:

  • Excessive watery mucus (causing runny nose or post-nasal drip)
  • Nasal congestion or stuffiness with pressure around the head, face and eyes
  • Headaches (sinus and/or migraine)
  • Occasionally, extremely cold hands and feet

What Causes Symptoms:

  • Extremes in temperature or humidity – very hot or cold air; very dry moist air
  • Pollution, dust or smoke (particulate irritants)
  • Strong odors (perfumes, chemicals, household cleaners, etc)
  • Spicy food – very hot or cold food
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Lying down or lowering your head
  • Emotional factors (getting upset)
  • Exercise

What Is The Treatment?

  • Avoid the irritants listed above as much as possible
  • Medications (as directed by your doctor) to decrease nasal inflammtion
  • Air filters (electrostatic, HEPA) may be helpful in decreasing dust and other particulate irritants in the home and work place
