Thanksgiving and Food Allergies

It’s almost time to get your gobble on! With Thanksgiving on the horizon, we thought we’d take some time to talk about food allergy avoidance strategies. Preparation is key (both in the kitchen and in life!)

If you are hosting a Thanksgiving and you are expecting food allergic friends or family, keep the ingredient labels of packaged foods or ingredient lists of recipes in case someone has a question. You could even invite them (or a parent) to participate in making the food to be sure it’s allergy safe. If you will be cooking with foods you know others are allergic to, isolate them on a separate cooking surface that can be washed immediately after using. Be careful of cross contamination, and be aware that cooking allergic foods can cause reactions when food particulates become airborne.

If you will be attending a Thanksgiving celebration, you can bring a safe meal you made yourself, put younger kids in high chairs with trays away from allergens, or join the party after the meal to avoid accidental exposure.

Have a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving!
